StarTribune Scholar Athlete of the Year

From the StarTribune:

KEVIN BELL ST. LOUIS PARK
Athletic future: Will attempt to earn a spot on the Notre Dame hockey team as a walk-on.

Athletic achievements: Four letters in Nordic skiing, three letters in hockey, three letters in track, two letters in soccer; two-time all-conference in soccer, track and hockey; five-time captain overall.

Academic achievements: 4.0 GPA; class valedictorian; National Merit Scholarship finalist.

Career ambition: Use an engineering degree to enter the field of civic engineering, with a focus on bridge and road construction. "I like to take charge," Bell said. "I'd like to own my own company."

Look to the future: "As one of three valedictorians I was able to speak to our class at graduation," Bell said. "I talked about a Newsweek article that called us one of the dumbest generations. I looked at our class and I knew we had a lot of talent. I took it as a challenge."

Life with symmetry: "I've never found a sport I didn't like," Bell said. "I've always been involved in a ton of sports, but my parents always emphasized that school comes first." Bell also plays the trumpet and piano.

Seal of approval: "Kevin is very intelligent, very coachable," St. Louis Park hockey coach Tim Donahue said. "He is a leader on and off the ice. He's a very competitive person who never gives up. His motor never quits."

Follow that dream: Bell's dad and his dad's dad attended Notre Dame. It has long been Bell's goal to do the same. "I have been exposed to Notre Dame since I was a kid," Bell said. "Along with the family history aspect, I just like the size of the school, the good academics and the good athletics."

Beating the odds: Bell has spoken with an assistant hockey coach at Notre Dame and informed him he will try out for the team in the fall. "I know it's a long shot, but I'm a good skater and a solid defenseman," Bell said. "I see myself as someone who can quarterback the back side."

« I have two sons, and if they turn out to be the type of citizen Kevin is, I will be a very happy father. » St. Louis Park hockey coach Tim Donahue.
